In the Nude: Warm Shades in Home Decor

It's Only Natural

With the lingering heat, we're still toasty from our sun-kissed skin and aren't ready to get rid of our light, airy whites of summer just yet. But with fall around the corner, we're warming up to new arrivals. Easily transition your whites into fall favorites with coffee-inspired hues, including cocoa and hazelnut. Need inspiration? Look no further than Oakland-based woodworker Alekzandra Zee. Whether she's covered in sawdust or denim, natural desert hues influence every aspect of her life. Now it's your turn.

Check out these easy tips that will transition your home decor--and your wardrobe for fall.

1. Color

Natural colors may seem tame, but varying shades add depth. When designing, be sure to incorporate white. You may already have some in your home, and the crisp, clean color is modern compared to brown's earthy and rustic feel. Gold makes for a great, unexpected neutral and is a way to brighten the room. Its shine is perfect for accent pieces and complements warm browns. Bronze or brass will also do the trick though. Remember to include touches of black to ground the palette.

2. Texture

With subtle colors, your pieces become all about texture. Think dots, watercolors, metallics . . .

It not only applies to how an item looks but how the piece feels. Select textures that are inviting and encourage usage.

3. Combine Elements

Mixing together different patterns and textures creates a space rich in character. Start with a staple or statement piece, such as a cowhide rug, and layer in more textural elements. Add a brown, leather sofa with a thick knitted pillow. A whitewash wooden bookcase is also great for displaying your favorite novels and pottery.

Whatever you choose, make it yours. Varying patterns and textures is a great way to show your personal style.

4. Add foliage or florals

Emphasize the natural and earthy elements with simple greenery indoors. It brings life to your space and add freshness. Whether it's small branches or full ferns, plants can affect the mood of the room. Cacti embrace the wildness of the desert, but eucalyptus creates a romantic note because its aroma surprises your every time your pass. Elevate plants with hanging wall planters, a raised planter, or a spot on the windowsill.
